Integration and Automation Services

Integration and automation are two critical processes in construction – no two projects are the same. And if you are working as a JV, the complexity increases.

With our APS/Forge services being on the front of integrating and extracting information from BIM and 3D models, we also work with the majority of popular construction platforms to deliver integrated and automated workflows with other systems. While integration refers to the process of connecting different applications or systems to enable the exchange of data and functionality, automation focuses on reducing manual effort by automating repetitive tasks and workflows.

Workato

Workato is an integration and automation platform that brings several benefits to the construction industry. Here are some key advantages of using Workato in construction:

1. Streamlined Processes: Workato automates repetitive and manual tasks, such as data entry, document routing, and project status updates. This streamlines processes, reduces errors, and improves overall efficiency.

2. Enhanced Collaboration: Workato integrates various construction management systems, such as project management software, document management platforms, and communication tools. This facilitates seamless collaboration between project teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders by ensuring data consistency and real-time information sharing.

3. Improved Data Accuracy: By automating data transfers between different systems, Workato minimizes the risk of errors associated with manual data entry. This results in improved data accuracy, reducing the likelihood of costly mistakes and rework.

4. Increased Visibility: Workato provides real-time visibility into project data by integrating and consolidating information from multiple sources. This helps project managers and stakeholders make informed decisions and monitor project progress effectively.

5. Cost and Time Savings: With automated workflows and reduced manual effort, Workato helps save time and reduce operational costs. This allows construction companies to allocate resources more efficiently and focus on value-added activities.

6. Scalability and Flexibility: Workato’s integration capabilities enable construction companies to scale their operations and accommodate future growth. It can adapt to changing business needs by easily integrating with new systems or technologies.

7. Customization: Workato offers a range of pre-built connectors and templates that can be customized to fit specific construction workflows and processes. This flexibility allows construction companies to tailor the platform to their unique requirements.

It’s important to note that while Workato can bring significant benefits to the construction industry, it is essential to assess individual project requirements and consult with experts to ensure successful implementation and maximize the advantages of using the platform.

Workato is available to Autodesk Construction Cloud users via ACC Connect.

Typical Integration and Automation Scenarios

Integration and automation are only limited by two things:

  • Feasibility (technical and financial)
  • Your imagination!

At BlackSmithSoft we use platforms such as Workato, as well as ones developed by our teams to create integrations and automations with popular construction platforms such as:

  • Autodesk Construction Cloud (Docs, Build, BIM 360)
  • Procore
  • Oracle Aconex
  • Microsoft Sharepoint (90% of construction companies we come across are using SharePoint in one or more business units)
  • Digital signature applications e.g. DocuSign, Adobe Sign.
  • Estimation systems
  • ERPs such as SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards.
  • Online drives such as BOX, Onedrive, Google Drive, Dropbox.
  • BlackSmithSoft applications such as DC, AWP, DoCheck and Power Search.

Construction Processes

The construction processes we typically help integrate and automate include:

  • Synchronisation between different platforms and CDEs e.g. between Autodesk and Procore, or SharePoint. This includes sync of files, folders, metadata, etc. One-way or two-way possibility.
  • Auto renaming of files when they move between folders or to other CDEs e.g. ISO 19650.
  • Triggers and alerts on key processes or thresholds including monitored documents or folders, delays in the project, punch lists/snags and critical issues (e.g. safety incidents). These can be in the form of immediate reports via email, messages in MS Teams or SMS.
  • Multistep document automation e.g. QR coding and digitally signing a document in ACC.
  • Project onboarding from ERP to CDE.
  • Project team members onboarding and offboarding.
  • Complex approval workflows outside of the main CDE.
  • Sending documents to other CDEs and systems once processed e.g. signed drawings to a corporate SharePoint.
  • Multi-system integration or exchange of data e.g. between JV members, construction and owner, authorities, etc.
  • Workbots – bots that can communicate urgent matters by applications such as Teams, as well as take orders.
  • Collecting construction, vendor and asset data from multiple sources inorder to publish into a Facilities or Operations Management system.
  • AI Workbots – smart bots that have ChatGPT interpreting construction-related questions and connected to your data.
